Curriculum Maps

"The curriculum is exciting and enriching."
Ofsted 2017

Please find below the Curriculum maps for each class and each subject area.  For more information about the Curriculum we teach,
please contact Mrs Julia Pearce.
Art & DT
Each half term the children complete an Art assessment using a still image.
This is kept in their Art and DT assessment folders, which we keep and add to throughout their time at St Mary's.  Every class has their own artist to research and produce a copy of their famous work.  DT is taught throughout the year using many different types of mediums including wood work, embroidery and recycled art.  Cooking is part of the DT curriculum, each class has one half term to produce something tasty from pizzas to swiss rolls!

Computing & ICT
We use the Rising Stars scheme to teach Computing and ICT.  We also use Scratch and Data Harvest software to teach the programming element of the Curriculum.  E-Safety is taught regularly as part of our ICT lessons.

English
The Key Stages teach each style of writing at the same time, so that we can share ideas and moderate work across classes accurately.  We use the 'Stick, Mark, Boom' system to mark work and ensure that all of the characteristics of the styles of writing have been included.  Children from Years 2 to 6 peer mark each other's work, which has proven to be effective.

Geography

Geography is taught in Years 1- 6 following the requirements set out in the 2014 Curriculum. Pupils in KS1 are taught to investigate people and places in their local area, as well as contrasting areas in the UK and beyond. In KS2 children learn about world concepts such as the Tropics, Poles and climates. They are taught to use vocabulary, skills and resources such as maps, atlases and aerial photographs to answer geographical questions.  We learn about our local area and Year 4 visit the Royston Cave.

History

Children learn about a range of historical periods from the Stone Age, to the Romans, to the Victorians to World War 2. We recognise the role re-enactment can have in bringing history alive and so have special history themed days from companies such as History Off the Page, as well as recreating significant events such as D-Day or the World War I Christmas truce. We also have a close link with the Royston Museum.

Maths
Years 1 to 6 are learning about the different topics covered in Maths at the same time, which allows us to share resources and moderated across classes accurately.  We use the 'Stick, Mark, Boom' assessment system which involves a pupil led assessment task each week to see if the children have understood the topics.

MFL (Modern Foreign Languages)
Years 3 to 6 learn French, using the 'Toute Le Monde' website which teaches the children through games, songs and activities.

Music
We buy into the Hertfordshire Music Service which provides us with specialised Music teachers who teach on Mondays and Thursdays from Reception to Year 6. We have a school choir and also offer a variety of musical instrument lessons as well.

PE
We buy into our local Sports Partnership allowing us access to specialist coaching and organised festivals, where children can participate and try new sports.  We also have 'Rising Stars' coaches who take our PE lessons once a week with every class from Nursery through to Year 6.  We also receive Sports Funding, details of how this is spent can be found under the 'Key Information' tab.

RE
We follow 'The Way, The Truth and The Life' scheme.  Each class has a different topic every half term which links with the Liturgical time of the year.  RE is an important part of our life at St Mary's,  please see the 'Spiritual life' section for more information.

Science
The children learn about the Human Body,Life Cycles and Electricity, as well as lots of other topic areas.  We have a link with Johnson Matthey, who visit annually to teach Year 6 in school and also kindly arrange  for a tour of their site.
